Institute for Writing and AI
A forum for serious thinking about writing in the age of AI.
Structured inquiry into how AI is changing writing processes, creative control, and public perception.
§ 00—Why IFWAI
People are already writing with AI.
Some openly. Some quietly. Some with confidence. Some with hesitation.
But almost no one has a place to think seriously about what that actually means—without turning it into a moral argument, a marketing pitch, or a defensive position.
IFWAI (pronounced IF-WAY) exists for that space in between:
Not the debate about whether AI should be used—but the reality of how it is already changing writing, authorship, and thinking itself.
§ 01—Core statement
Writing is changing.
Not just at the level of tools, but at the level of process, authorship, and how ideas move from thought to text. The public conversation has become polarized—reduced to slogans about “AI-generated vs human-written,” while the reality of how writing actually works is far more complex.
The Institute for Writing and AI (IFWAI) exists to create a space for that complexity.
§ 02—What we do
A cross-disciplinary forum for writers, technologists, editors, researchers, and professionals who are actively engaging with AI in the writing process.
We focus on:
- 01How writing is actually produced — not just how it is labeled.
- 02The evolving role of authorship, editing, and creative control.
- 03The intersection of craft, technology, and economics.
- 04The real-world impact of AI across publishing, media, and professional writing.
§ 03—Current Research
Current inquiries and research projects:
Authorship & AI Perception Study
How knowledge of AI involvement changes reader perception of quality and legitimacy.
Writing Process Disclosure Study
How readers evaluate writing differently when drafting, revision, or AI collaboration is disclosed.
Public Perception Archive
Ongoing collection of responses surrounding AI, creativity, and authorship.
§ 04—What we are not
IFWAI is not an advocacy movement, marketing platform, or gatekeeping institution.
Its purpose is not to defend or reject AI outright, but to examine how writing and authorship are changing in practice.
We are interested in inquiry over ideology.
§ 05—Why this exists
Most public conversations about AI and writing are happening at the extremes.
Meanwhile, a large and growing group of people are actively using AI in their writing workflows, thinking critically about its implications, and looking for a space where they don’t have to hide or oversimplify their views.
This institute exists for that middle layer.
